Two Pakistani men held after four farmworkers found dead in burned-out van in southern Italy

Italian police have arrested two Pakistani nationals on suspicion of murder after the charred bodies of four Pakistani agricultural labourers were discovered inside a blazing minivan at a service station in Calabria. Investigators say CCTV footage shows the suspects blocking the vehicle’s doors from the outside before dousing it with an accelerant.

Arrests made after bodies discovered at petrol station

The vehicle was discovered at a petrol station near the village of Amendolara in the Calabria region, an agricultural area that relies heavily on migrant labour.

Investigators are treating the case as a homicide, based on evidence gathered from CCTV cameras at the scene. According to reports, the footage shows two individuals blocking the van’s doors from the outside before pouring liquid over the vehicle.

The footage is said to capture a fire breaking out moments later and the suspects fleeing the area. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found the bodies of four men inside the vehicle.

Antonio Borelli, the local police chief, said investigators had already reached a clear conclusion regarding the nature of the incident. “This is definitely a murder – we now need to establish the details,” Borelli said.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims or provided further information about the suspects.

Tensions rise within Calabria’s migrant labour community

The incident has drawn attention to tensions within parts of Calabria’s labour community. At least 14 cases of arson involving cars and minivans used by Pakistani migrants have been recorded in the area in recent months.

Disputes over access to farm work, residency documents and housing have fuelled friction among migrant groups employed in the region’s agricultural sector.

Calabria, one of the poorest regions in Italy, depends heavily on seasonal and migrant labour for its agricultural output. Human rights groups have previously expressed concern over working conditions, exploitation and competition for jobs among vulnerable migrant communities.

Italian authorities have launched a full investigation into the killings. Forensic examinations and witness interviews are expected to form part of the inquiry as detectives seek to establish a motive for the attack and whether anyone else was involved.
