The attack took place around late afternoon and started from the Golan, hitting multiple locations in the suburbs of Damascus.
The Syrian military intercepted the incoming Israeli missiles, successfully shooting down a significant number of them, but not without injuring two soldiers and causing some material damage. The defence ministry said in a statement:
“Tonight, approximately at 22:05 local time [20:05 GMT], the Israeli enemy launched an air aggression from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, striking positions in the governorate of Damascus. Our air defence systems reacted to enemy missiles and shot down several of them. As a result of the aggression, two soldiers were injured and some material damage was caused.”
Syrian air defences have repeatedly repelled Israeli strikes, including a previous incident that caused destruction near Damascus.
Recent weeks have seen a surge in Israeli offensive operations from the Golan Heights, targeting areas around Damascus and causing disruptions, particularly affecting Damascus International Airport. Israel’s escalation of aggression against Syria correlates with the regime’s military actions in Gaza, which began with Operation Storm Al-Aqsa launched by Palestinian resistance groups on 7 October.
Since the beginning of that conflict, some 19,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on the fully besieged Gaza Strip.
