Gunmen shot dead the personal secretary and an adviser to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada on a busy road in the city centre on Tuesday.
Brugada called the killings a “direct attack” and promised that the authorities would continue to fight insecurity in the Mexican capital.
Surveillance camera footage shows the adviser standing on the street waiting for his secretary, who pulled up in a car. Suddenly, an unknown man wearing a motorcycle helmet pulled out a gun and started shooting at both of them. He fled with his accomplice on a motorcycle.
The murder of the secretary and the mayor’s adviser is the most high-profile attack on capital officials since the head of the capital’s police, Garcia Harfuch, was attacked five years ago. Criminals linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) ambushed and attacked the police officer as he was leaving his home. Harfuch escaped, but two of his bodyguards were killed, as was a woman who was at the scene of the attack.
On May 11, Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez, a candidate for mayor of Texistepec in the Mexican state of Veracruz, was shot dead. She was holding a meeting with voters at the time of her murder. Three other people were killed along with her.
Attacks on political candidates are common during election cycles in Mexico. In May 2024, a candidate for mayor was killed during the election campaign in the southern state of Guerrero.
