Typhoon Nari approaching Tokyo, heavy rain expected over wide area

Typhoon Nari, the fifth of the season, formed near the Ogasawara Islands, approximately 1,000 kilometres south of Japan’s main island of Honshu, the Japan Meteorological Agency said on Monday.

According to experts, it will move northward in the coming days and then northeastward. On July 14, it will pass east of the Boso Peninsula in close proximity to Tokyo. According to forecasts, on July 15, the typhoon may turn northeast and affect Hokkaido, as well as the Russian Kuril Islands.

Wind speeds at the epicentre are reaching 18 metres per second, with gusts of up to 25 metres per second. The typhoon Nari will be accompanied by heavy rain. According to weather forecasters, up to 120 millimetres of precipitation may fall in the Kanto region on Honshu Island, which includes seven prefectures, including the capital Tokyo, over the course of a day.

Residents of potentially affected areas are advised to monitor forecasts and take precautions.
