UK and Ukraine sign 10-year security cooperation agreement

Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday that the United Kingdom and Ukraine signed a 10-year “unprecedented” security cooperation agreement.

Volodymyr Zelensky said he had reached an agreement with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on annual support for Ukraine and “comprehensive cooperation” to improve the military and security forces’ military capabilities, state institutions and societal systems.

The Ukrainian president stressed that the signed agreement was the first bilateral agreement that fulfils the Group of Seven’s promise to guarantee Ukraine’s security.

This day has already entered the history of our state – today we have an agreement with the UK, a security agreement that we have been working on for a long time. This is the first bilateral agreement implementing the Group of Seven agreement on Ukraine’s security guarantees, our protection, and our security growth. Thanks to the United Kingdom and personally to Mr Prime Minister Sunak for the primacy and leadership, he said.

According to Zelensky, as a result of this agreement, Kyiv will attain a level of security that will deter Russia.

In addition, the statement said that London would also, according to the document, facilitate Ukraine’s accession to NATO. In the event of a new conflict with Russia, the UK and Ukraine will be required to hold consultations within 24 hours.

The UK also commits, within the requirements of its own legislation, to provide Ukraine with instant assistance in various fields, such as security and military equipment.
