The UK Prime Minister has hailed a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran as a “step towards relief for the Middle East,” calling on both nations to pursue a durable agreement and restore maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has welcomed a US-Iran agreement on a two-week ceasefire, urging the countries to convert it into a long-term settlement.
“I welcome the ceasefire reached overnight, which will bring relief to the entire Middle East region and the world,” he said.
According to Starmer, London and its partners must now “do everything possible to support and maintain the ceasefire, turn it into a long-term agreement, and ensure the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.”
Earlier, Downing Street announced that Starmer will meet Gulf leaders on April 8 to “discuss diplomatic efforts to uphold the ceasefire.”
On Wednesday night, US President Donald Trump expressed willingness to negotiate with Iran based on proposals presented by Tehran, stating that military action would be paused for two weeks “subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s full, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz.” The first round of talks between Washington and Tehran is expected on April 10 in Pakistan.
