Britain’s population is expected to rise to 72.5 million by mid-2032 from 67.6 million in mid-2022, driven almost entirely by net migration into the country, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Tuesday.
About 43 per cent of the population growth will come from migrant inflows and about 57 per cent from natural increase, ONS officials said.
At the same time, the natural increase will be carried out mainly due to the growth of birth rates in migrant families. The ONS also noted that by 2037 the number of UK residents over 80 years old will grow twice, their number will reach 6 million. At the moment, the population of the UK is 63.7 million people.
Experts predict that the population of the entire European Union will increase by 16 million people – up to 523 million people. At the same time, experts expect more “ageing” of European residents. In 45 years, the share of people over 65 will be 28 per cent against the current figure of 18 per cent.
In addition, life expectancy is expected to increase from 79.1 to 89.1 years for women and from 77.6 to 84 years for men.
