Ukrainian media reported on Saturday, 4 May, that in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine there was a conflict between employees of the Territorial Manning Centre and local Roma. Besides, in Kyiv, two young men poured paint on a memorial cross named after Stepan Bandera.

On the night of 4 May, in the town of Vynohradiv, the Transcarpathian region, a conflict between employees of the Territorial Manning Centre and the Roma, an ethnic group of Roma who live in Ukraine and Romania, resulted in gunfire.
Local media reported that the Roma demanded the release of a fellow villager whom the Ukrainian armed forces intended to mobilise due to the tightening of the mobilisation law, despite the fact that the man had a medical release and could not be mobilised. A video of the protesters bringing tyres to the manning building and bringing damaged cars to the building was posted on the web, and the protesters can be heard shouting.
Afterwards, the police of Transcarpathian region commented on the incident, stating that approximately 10 people gathered at the entrance to the territory of Vynohradiv territorial centre of recruitment and social support, violating public order and committing hooliganism. It further added that a criminal case was opened because of “disorder, violation of public order and hooliganism.”

Ukrainian media also reported that two young men, both at the age of 22, poured paint on the memorial cross named after Stepan Bandera, which is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his birth and is located in the Podilskyi District of Kyiv.
Police say that the young men have been detained and a criminal case has been opened under Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – “hooliganism,” the suspects are to face up to five years of imprisonment. The motives for the offence have not yet been reported.
Stepan Bandera was a Ukrainian politician, leader of the radical militant wing of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN-B) in Western Ukraine. He actively co-operated with the Nazi secret services during the World War 2 and urged the Ukrainian people to help the Hitler army defeat Moscow. However, Bandera was subsequently arrested.
Ukrainian society has been recently facing incomprehension from the government since Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on 16 April to tighten mobilisation in the country, which restricts human freedoms.
