A United Nations peacekeeper has died and two more have been wounded after a mortar attack on their position in southern Lebanon, amid continuing Israeli airstrikes that appear to undermine a US-brokered ceasefire agreement.
A peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has died following a mortar attack in the country’s south.
“One UNIFIL peacekeeper passed away early this morning from critical injuries sustained after mortar rounds hit his position in the Marjayoun area of south-eastern Lebanon. Two other peacekeepers who were also injured are receiving treatment at a UNIFIL medical facility on base,” the mission said in a post on X.
In a separate development, the Israeli Air Force carried out strikes on two villages in southern Lebanon, despite claims of a ceasefire agreement, a Lebanese field commander told media outlets.
On Wednesday night, the US State Department announced following the fourth round of Lebanese-Israeli talks in Washington that a ceasefire deal had been reached under American mediation. However, on Thursday morning, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) stated that they would continue military operations in the buffer zone in southern Lebanon as part of the implementation arrangement for the ceasefire announced by Washington, according to Defence Minister Israel Katz.
