UN Secretary-General “strongly condemns” Ukraine’s strike on Donetsk

At least 25 people were killed and 20 others injured on Sunday as a result of shelling in the city of Donetsk. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “strongly condemned” Ukraine’s attack on Donetsk, Russian media reported.

The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the incident and placed the blame on Ukraine and the West. The ministry claimed that the shelling was carried out from Ukrainian-controlled Avdiivka, indicating that the Investigative Committee had launched a probe.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the attack, according to his spokesperson.

“The secretary-general strongly condemns all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, including today’s shelling of the city of Donetsk in Ukraine. Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international humanitarian law, are unacceptable and must stop immediately.”

A Donetsk market was shelled by the Ukrainian military on Sunday. According to Russian media, Ukrainian troops used 152-mm and 155-mm artillery systems.

Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky stated that the incident would be discussed at a meeting of the UN Security Council initiated by Russia.
