The UN Security Council will vote on Monday on a draft resolution to end the war in Gaza submitted by non-permanent members, a group called the “ten elected countries.”
The draft resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan, after the UN Security Council failed to pass a US draft resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, as China and Russia vetoed the resolution, invalidating the votes of eleven members in favour of the US draft resolution, and Algeria voted against the draft resolution.
The resolution does not link the pause in fighting to the release of Israeli prisoners held in Gaza, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at a news conference in Amman, Jordan, on Monday. This was one of the reasons why the previous draft was vetoed.
China has said it supports the new draft UNSC resolution, which is due to be voted on Monday. Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said:
We hope the Security Council will pass it as soon as possible and send a strong signal for the cessation of hostilities.
The UN Security Council has ten non-permanent members: Japan, Algeria, Switzerland, Mozambique, Malta, Guyana, South Korea, Slovenia, Sierra Leone and Ecuador.
The Council will also hold its monthly open meeting on Tuesday to discuss the Palestinian issue, in particular the report of the Secretary-General on the implementation of resolution 2334 on the illegality of settlements in the occupied territory of Palestine.
At least 32,226 Palestinians have been killed, including 84 in the past 24 hours, and 74,518 injured in Israel’s air and ground offensive since 7 October, the Gaza’s health ministry said in a Sunday update.
