The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that on Tuesday morning, Israeli drones dropped four grenades near peacekeepers who were clearing roadblocks preventing access to a UN position.
“This is one of the most serious attacks on UNIFIL personnel and property since the conclusion of the ceasefire agreement in November last year,” UNIFIL said in a statement on Wednesday.
One grenade exploded within 20 metres and three within approximately 100 metres of UN personnel and vehicles. UNIFIL said the Israeli military had been informed in advance of road clearance operations in the area southeast of the village of Marwahin.
Last week, the UN Security Council unanimously extended the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon until the end of 2026, after which an orderly and safe reduction and withdrawal of troops will begin over the course of a year. Established in 1978, UNIFIL patrols Lebanon’s southern border with Israel.
