Ursula von der Leyen comes to Ukraine to express European’s encouragement

European Commission President makes surprise visit to Kyiv ahead of presenting progress report on Ukraine’s EU membership bid.

The European Commission continues to support Ukraine, and therefore, its President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv to show support and ahead of the presentation of a key report on Kyiv’s EU accession aspirations amid the difficult circumstances Kyiv faces over the situation in the Middle East.

“I’m here to discuss Ukraine’s accession path to the EU,” von der Leyen said on X from Kyiv.

On 8 November, the European Commission will publish its report on the extent to which Ukraine and other EU applicants are meeting the economic, legal and other conditions for joining the bloc. Earlier this week, von der Leyen visited several countries in the Western Balkans that are also aiming to become EU members.

Of course the enlargement package will be at the top of the agenda, but also the financial and military support.

The progress report is a key aspect at the time of negotiations with Kyiv, so based on the Commission’s assessment, EU leaders will meet in the middle of December to discuss the beginning of formal accession talks with Ukraine. Any decisions on enlargement require the support of all 27 EU member states.
