US begin World Cup campaign with emphatic 4-1 victory over Paraguay

The United States began its FIFA World Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay, as Folarin Balogun scored twice in a commanding display from the hosts.

Malik Tillman and Giovanni Reyna also got on the scoresheet as the US controlled large portions of the match and entertained the home crowd with an attacking performance.

The win gives the Americans a strong start to the tournament and boosts confidence ahead of tougher group-stage fixtures.

Balogun shines with first-half double

Folarin Balogun thought he had opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but officials ruled out the goal for offside after reviewing the buildup involving Christian Pulisic.

The striker responded quickly and scored minutes later after Antonee Robinson surged down the left wing and delivered a dangerous ball into the box. A slight deflection helped the pass reach Balogun, who finished calmly.

Balogun added his second goal just before halftime with a brilliant solo effort. He beat two defenders on the right side before curling the ball into the top-left corner to give the United States a commanding 3-0 lead.

United States dominate possession and chances

The Americans controlled the game throughout the first half and enjoyed around 75 percent possession while repeatedly testing Paraguay’s defense.

Malik Tillman doubled the lead during the first-half spell of dominance, while defender Chris Richards nearly added another goal with a header that narrowly missed the target.

Paraguay struggled to create meaningful chances before the break as the US midfield controlled the tempo and limited counterattacking opportunities.

Paraguay respond but Reyna seals victory

Paraguay improved after halftime and showed greater attacking urgency as they searched for a way back into the match.

Julio Enciso helped create Paraguay’s only goal after setting up substitute Mauricio, who scored from close range to reduce the deficit.

Any hopes of a comeback disappeared when Giovanni Reyna produced a superb finish with the outside of his right foot, curling the ball into the far corner to restore the three-goal advantage.

Star-studded opening ceremony lights up tournament

The match followed a major opening ceremony featuring performances from international music stars including Katy Perry, Future, Tyla, Anitta and Lisa.

The event attracted global attention as fans celebrated the start of the World Cup on American soil.

US President Donald Trump did not attend the ceremony but reportedly called the national team before kickoff to wish them luck.
