US, China expect a phone conversation between two leaders

The US expects a phone conversation between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the spring or in the coming months.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed to hold additional high-level diplomatic meetings and consultations, including a phone conversation between the two leaders.

The two sides held talks in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday and Saturday. Their meeting was the first since Taiwan’s presidential election earlier this month. They discussed the situation over Taiwan.

China’s Foreign Ministry said Wang told Sullivan that the biggest problem in China-US relations is the issue of “Taiwan independence.” Wang urged the US to support the “peaceful unification of China.”

Sullivan reportedly emphasized the US commitment to the One-China policy.
