A US citizen died on Friday during a reported confrontation between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to local officials.
Sayfollah Musallet, 21, was visiting family in the village of Sinjil. He was born in Florida. A municipal official and a relative confirmed his death to NPR.
The Israeli military stated that a confrontation occurred between the two groups. They said they are investigating the reported death of a Palestinian civilian.
A spokesperson for the US embassy also confirmed Musallet’s death.
Lack of prosecution raises concerns
Israeli authorities rarely prosecute settlers accused of attacking Palestinians. When they do, few cases result in conviction.
Some US Department of Justice attorneys have criticised what they see as an unequal approach to investigations. They point to a difference in how the department handles alleged crimes by Israel compared to those by Russia or Hamas.
Escalating conflict and humanitarian impact
Tensions have increased since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. That assault killed around 1,200 people and led to the abduction of hundreds more.
In response, Israel launched ongoing military operations in Gaza. Reports estimate that over 55,000 Palestinians have died, with more than half being women and children. Over 127,000 people have suffered injuries.
The conflict has damaged essential services in Gaza. Health and welfare systems are struggling to operate under the current conditions.
Despite international calls to reduce violence, the United States continues to support Israel. Last month, the US announced $30 million in funding for a food supply programme backed by Israel. The United Nations has described the programme as a “death trap.”
Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire continue, but no agreement has been reached.
