The United States has approved the sale of more than $7.4 billion in bombs, missiles, and related equipment to Israel. The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed this decision on Friday. The sale includes $6.75 billion in bombs, guidance kits, and fuses, along with $660 million for Hellfire missiles.
The bombs will help Israel meet current and future threats. They will strengthen its homeland defence and act as a deterrent to regional risks, according to the DSCA. The missiles will improve the Israeli Air Force’s ability to defend its borders and protect vital infrastructure.
Significance of the sale in the context of ongoing tensions
In October 2023, Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza. This came after Hamas attacked Israel in an unprecedented way. The United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and other countries have labelled Hamas a terrorist group.
The war caused massive destruction in Gaza, a coastal strip along the Mediterranean. It displaced many residents. However, a ceasefire has been in place since last month, ending the fighting and allowing for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Although concerns about civilian casualties arose, the Biden administration blocked the shipment of larger bombs initially. However, after President Trump returned to office, the shipment was approved.
The US State Department has now approved the sale, but Congress still needs to give its approval. Given the strong alliance between the US and Israel, the sale is expected to proceed without issues.
