US House goes into recess without voting on Ukraine aid package

The US House of Representatives has gone on recess until the end of February without voting on a bill on aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Early Tuesday, the Senate approved a bipartisan financial measure providing aid to Ukraine, Israel and other allies by 70 votes.

But Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said the Senate bill lacked the tougher border security measures demanded by House Republicans and that he would not advance it in the lower chamber.

House GOP leadership cancelled the vote for Friday, and the House of Representatives will return to Washington on February 28 after the President’s Day recess.

A week ago, a group of senators from both parties introduced a bill that included measures to increase border security as well as aid to Ukraine and Israel.

Republicans, who demanded that aid to Ukraine be accompanied by action on the border, argued the package was insufficient and Johnson warned it would not pass in the House.
