US plan to deploy missiles in Germany could lead to Cold War-style confrontation, Russia says

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that a US plan to deploy long-range missiles to Germany as a deterrent could lead to “direct confrontation.”

Peskov made the statement Thursday after the US announced on Wednesday during a NATO summit in Washington that it planned to begin periodic deployment of Tomahawk cruise missiles, SM-6 and hypersonic missiles in Germany starting from 2026.

We are taking steady steps towards the Cold War. All the attributes of the Cold War with the direct confrontation are returning.

Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that Russia had expected such a move and would develop a military response.

At the NATO summit, Poland, Germany, France, and Italy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop land-based cruise missiles with a range of more than 500 kilometres. The agreement fills a gap in European defence caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine and the need to supply it from EU stockpiles.
