US reports progress as Israel and Lebanon push for breakthrough in fourth round of ceasefire talks

The United States has announced that Israel and Lebanon have made significant strides towards de-escalation following the fourth round of negotiations, as Washington seeks to broker a comprehensive agreement to end months of cross-border hostilities.

Israel and Lebanon have made progress during the fourth round of talks aimed at ending the conflict, a US state department official has said.

“Progress continues on policy and security issues as we overcome the setbacks of the past two decades and move towards a comprehensive agreement designed to restore Lebanese sovereignty and ensure Israel’s security,” Tommy Pigott, a state department spokesperson, said following the talks in Washington.

The negotiations are set to resume on Wednesday.

On Monday, US president Donald Trump said that Israel and the Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah had established a ceasefire regime. However, many media outlets have reported that Israeli forces are continuing to strike southern areas of Lebanon.

Lebanon and Israel agreed to a truce in April. The Lebanese army has not taken part in the conflict with Israel; hostilities have been carried out by Hezbollah, which is not a party to the ceasefire agreements.
