US strikes on Houthi radar site in Yemen, but not linked to Prosperity Guardian operation

The US struck a Houthi-controlled radar installation on Saturday morning Yemen time, according to the US Central Command.

The US has launched a new strike in Yemen, a day after US-led forces carried out naval and air strikes on at least 28 sites controlled by Houthi rebels.

“This strike was conducted by the USS Carney (DDG 64) using Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles and was a follow-on action on a specific military target associated with strikes taken on Jan. 12 designed to degrade the Houthi’s ability to attack maritime vessels, including commercial vessels,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) wrote on X.

The strikes are unrelated to the multinational Operation Prosperity Guardian mission to counter Houthi attacks, which was announced last month by US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.

“These strikes have no association with and are separate from Operation Prosperity Guardian, a defensive coalition of over 20 countries operating in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden,” CENTCOM said.

Earlier on Thursday, the US and Britain, backed by Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, launched airstrikes on military installations in areas of Yemen, following a series of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

The Biden administration stated that the strikes were “defensive” and intended to reduce the ability of the Houthis to strike ships in the Red Sea.
