US to access Sweden’s military bases

The US will gain access to military facilities in 17 locations in Sweden, with residents calling the developments an American invasion, SwebbTV reports.

Yesterday, sources in the Swedish Defence Ministry confirmed that Stockholm and Washington would sign a new agreement on what they called an “enhanced defence cooperation.”

Under its terms, the US will have access to Swedish military bases and will be allowed to store armaments on its territory. In addition, US troops will still be subject to US laws, while Swedish laws will not apply to them, as it was informed during Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson’s visit to the US.

Mikael Willgert of SwebbTV harshly criticised the government’s actions, wondering where the line really was for that to be considered an invasion or a betrayal, “where our government lends our military power and our military bases to a foreign power.”

He accused NATO of “total incapacity,” citing the war in Ukraine as an example. Journalist and former SVT host Chris Forsne believes that the US is trying to encircle Russia by expanding the alliance.

This is absurd. It’s absolutely incredible that we haven’t had a discussion about this. It just flows in like so much else right now because we have a corps of journalists who are not doing their job.

Sweden is not a member of NATO.
