US to announce aid package for Ukraine in late December, which could be final – White House

US President Joe Biden plans another military aid package for Ukraine in December, the White House revealed on Monday, with further aid requiring approval in Congress.

When that one’s done… we will have no more replenishment authority available to us and we’re going to need Congress to act without delay.

The White House warned that US aid to Ukraine would run out by the end of the year. Talks continued Monday in the Senate over an agreement that would include aid to Ukraine and Israel, as well as new measures to strengthen security along the US-Mexico border.

Republicans insisted that reinforced border security should be part of any deal on aid to Kyiv. Earlier this month, they blocked an emergency spending bill that included $50 billion in support for Ukraine, demanding stronger measures to control immigration at the US border with Mexico.

The top Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, stated on Monday:

“Over the past week, Democrats and Republicans have made important progress towards an agreement on the national security supplemental. While the job is not finished, I am confident we’re headed in the right direction.”

However, even if the Senate reaches an agreement and passes the bill this week, the House of Representatives, where a significant number of Republicans opposed additional aid to Ukraine, will not return to work until January 8 at the earliest.

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to Washington to discuss another aid package for Ukraine, but the meeting did not achieve the expected success.
