US to pledge $3bn to the Green Climate Fund

At COP28 US Vice President Kamala Harris announced a new $3 billion contribution to the Green Climate Fund.

On Saturday, as the US President is not expected to attend the meeting, Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Dubai for the UN climate summit made and the following statement:

Today I am also proud to announce a new $3 billion pledge to the Green Climate Fund, which helps developing countries invest in resilience, clean energy and nature-based solutions.

She emphasised the importance of collective action, saying that the world must come together to address this critical issue, as both action and inaction by any party on a global scale will have far-reaching consequences for billions of people in the coming decades.

Despite the results already achieved, Harris noted:

Around the world, there are those who seek to slow or stop our progress. Leaders who deny climate science, delay climate action and spread misinformation. Corporations that greenwash climate inaction and lobby for billions of dollars in fossil fuel subsidies of their own.

She urged increased ambition, accelerated efforts and brave leadership to overcome the challenges.

Despite the pledges, the US is known to have increased its contributions to more than $9.5 billion this year alone, meeting President Joe Biden’s goal of $11 billion by 2024.
