US, UK launch airstrikes on Yemen capital Sanaa

The US and Britain carried out airstrikes on targets of the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement’s Houthis in rebel-controlled Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, Lebanese media reported on Thursday.

The strikes targeted Jarban in Sanaa province, Harf Sufyan in Amran and al-Luhaya in Hodeidah, although details of the targets remained unclear.

Earlier this week, the Houthis claimed responsibility for attacking the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the northern Red Sea and launching rockets and drones at targets inside Israel.

Two days afterwards, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that it had carried out “multiple precision strikes” against “two underground Advanced Conventional Weapons (ACW) depots in Iranian Houthi-controlled Yemeni territory.”

CENTCOM said the sites were used to attack US naval and commercial vessels in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The strikes did not cause casualties or damage to US personnel or equipment.

The Houthis began striking ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in November 2023 to protest Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip. On the night of January 12, 2024, in response to their actions, the US and UK launched an attack on Houthi targets in Yemen.

The White House said the strikes on movement-controlled areas of the country were defensive in nature. It was also claimed at the time that the strikes were carried out to protect international vessels.
