Vaughan Gething confirmed as new First Minister of Wales

Welsh Labour’s new leader Vaughan Gething has been sworn in as Welsh First Minister.

Mr. Gething, 50, was elected head of the Welsh Government by members of the Senedd on Wednesday. He is expected to form a cabinet in the next few days. He succeeds Mark Drakeford, who resigned in an emotional speech on Tuesday after holding the post since 2018.

Labour MPs present, as well as Jane Dodds, the only Liberal Democrat member of the Senedd, supported Gethinks.

Conservatives and Plaid Cymru members voted for their party leaders. The opposition parties’ nomination of alternatives was largely symbolic: none won enough votes to get the role. In total, Mr. Gething received 27 votes out of 51.

The UK government is gradually becoming multinational: it is led by Rishi Sunak, a Hindu; London is governed by Sadiq Khan, a Labour leader of Pakistani origin; Scotland is run by Humza Yousaf, a Pakistani; and Wales is headed by Vaughan Gethinks, a Zambian.
