Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez has announced that the country will withdraw $346 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support reconstruction efforts following devastating earthquakes that killed thousands of people.
The funds will come from Venezuela’s reserve assets and will be used to assist affected communities, including rebuilding homes, restoring infrastructure and supporting essential public services.
“This will help support the affected families with housing, infrastructure, essential public services and other needs,” Rodríguez said in a statement shared on Telegram.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed that the organization had helped Venezuela access its own resources through the Emergency Humanitarian Needs Fund.
Georgieva said the IMF had worked with key partners to facilitate the release of the funds as Venezuela continues responding to the aftermath of the disaster.
The earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June were the strongest recorded in the country in more than a century, causing widespread destruction and leaving thousands of families in need of assistance.
More than 5,000 people have been confirmed dead following the disaster, with rescue and recovery operations continuing in affected areas.
The Venezuelan government said the IMF funding will help accelerate reconstruction and provide support to communities recovering from the damage.
