Venezuela’s socialists win elections in landslide

The ruling Great Patriotic Pole coalition won more than 82% of the vote in Sunday’s elections in Venezuela, securing 23 of the 24 governorships, while United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) leader Neil Villamizar became the first governor of the new Guayana Esequiba region after a historic plebiscite.

The Great Patriotic Pole coalition, which includes Venezuela’s ruling party, the PSUV, won the parliamentary elections with over 82% of the vote, securing 23 of the 24 governor posts.

At a press conference broadcast on VTV, council member Carlos Quintero said:

“With 93.01% of the votes counted and a turnout of 42.63%, the Great Patriotic Pole has received 4,553,484 votes, representing 82.68% of the total votes cast.”

According to official data, the Democratic Alliance, a centrist party, came in second with 6.25% of the vote, followed by the UNTC Única coalition with 5.18% and Neighbourhood Force with 2.57%.

The remaining votes were either declared invalid or distributed among other parties.

As of Monday night, the PSUV and its allies had secured 40 of the 50 seats filled by party lists. Last Sunday, Venezuelan citizens elected 285 members of the National Assembly, 260 members of regional councils and 24 governors.

A historic event took place in these elections: for the first time, Venezuelans elected the governor of a new administrative entity, Guayana Esequiba, created in December 2023 following a nationwide referendum. The representative of the ruling party, retired admiral Neil Villamizar, was elected.

According to the results announced, the opposition was able to win in only one of the 24 states — Cojedes, where Alberto Galíndez became governor. In all other regions, representatives of the Great Patriotic Pole took the posts of governors.
