At least four people have died and four others remain missing after a flash flood swept through a mountainous village in Vietnam’s northern Lai Chau province, according to state media.
The disaster struck Muong Than village early Friday after days of intense rainfall across parts of northern Vietnam. Seven people were also injured in the flooding.
The Vietnam News Agency reported that floodwaters covered large parts of the village, with red mud, rocks and fallen trees damaging roads and nearby areas.
Photos released by the agency showed debris scattered across the area, including piles of rocks and wooden logs blocking damaged roads.
Since Wednesday, heavy rainfall has triggered flash floods and landslides across northern Vietnam, damaging roads, power networks and hundreds of homes.
The country’s disaster management agency said the flooding also affected around 238 hectares of agricultural land.
Authorities have warned that more severe weather could hit the region, with some areas forecast to receive up to 250 millimeters of rain on Saturday.
Vietnam regularly experiences deadly storms and flooding during the rainy season, which typically runs from July through September.
Government data shows that natural disasters, mainly floods, killed 489 people in Vietnam last year.
Officials continue to monitor affected areas as rescue teams search for missing residents and prepare for possible further flooding.
