Archaeologists have discovered a Viking burial ground with 30 graves north of the city of Aarhus in Denmark. The graves are believed to belong to a noble family who ruled the area in the 9th century.
Among the bodies, scientists found beads, coins, pottery, a chest with decorative items, and an unusual box with gold thread and scissors.
“People took what was important to them to the grave because they wanted to take it with them to the afterlife,” archaeologist Mads Ravm from the Mesgaard Museum said.
Aarhus is considered one of the oldest cities in Denmark, whose territory was an important part of the Viking Age and a centre of international trade at the time. Experts plan to study the wood used to make the coffins in detail to determine the exact time of the ancient Vikings’ burial.
In the late 1980s, a nobleman’s farm was discovered less than a kilometre from this necropolis. The farm is believed to have belonged to Harald Bluetooth Gormsson, who ruled from 958 to 986.
