Von der Leyen: EU counts on China’s influence on Russia to end war in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine was one of the main topics of the meeting between von der Leyen, Macron and Xi Jinping, EU Neighbours East reported.

The meeting between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emanuel Macron and Chinese President Xi Jinping took place in Paris on May 6.

We agree that Europe and China have a shared interest in peace and security. We count on China to use all its influence on Russia to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Von der Leyen noted that Xi played “an important role in de-escalating Russia’s irresponsible nuclear threats.”

The two sides also discussed China’s commitment not to supply Russia with any lethal equipment. The EU Commission president stated that “more effort is needed” to reduce the supply of dual-use goods to Russia that reach the battlefield.

Given the existential nature of the threats stemming from this war for both Ukraine and Europe, this does affect the EU-China relations.
