Von der Leyen honoured with Charlemagne Prize

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has been selected as the winner of the prestigious Charlemagne Prize for her management of “crises of historic proportions,” the prize’s organisers said on Wednesday.

Von der Leyen, who is head of the European Commission from 2019, wrote on X:

“This prize has touched me deeply. The Charlemagne Prize carries Europe, our reliable anchor in turbulent times.”

The award’s board of directors said the 66-year-old German politician “epitomises Europe” and called her “a strong voice for Europe in the world.”

The judges said von der Leyen has stood up for Europe’s interests at a time of serious challenges.

The Commission President was praised for her services to uniting EU member states, her leadership during the coronavirus pandemic, her strong stance on Russia and her commitment to the EU Green Deal. Von der Leyen, the first woman to lead the European Commission, was re-elected for a second term last year.
