The US Department of Justice has increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to $50 million, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on social media on Thursday.
“The Department of Justice and the State Department are offering a $50 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro,” the Attorney General wrote.
According to the US Department of Justice, Maduro is accused of collaborating with “international terrorist organisations” and drug trafficking. Washington considers him a “threat to national security.”
In January, the Axios portal reported that the administration of US president Donald Trump would like to see a peaceful transition of power in Venezuela.
Last September, the US seized two of Maduro’s planes.
At the same time, the European Parliament called on the EU and its member states to request an international arrest warrant for Maduro after the presidential elections held at the end of July, with MEPs considering the electoral process in Venezuela to be insufficiently “transparent.”
