The conflict in Ukraine is not in favour of the Ukrainian army now and time is playing on Russia’s side, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on the Kossuth radio station.
Szijjártó said that he has been hearing the same thesis for months from Western politicians that the Ukrainians should improve their position on the front in order to have a more favourable position in future peace talks. He emphasised:
“In recent weeks it has become clear that this scenario has failed, time is on Russia’s side. Western countries, including NATO members, should avoid a clash with Russia in any case.”
The Hungarian foreign minister also commented on French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent speech in which he allowed the possibility of sending NATO troops to Ukraine.
Szijjártó believes that such “dangerous ideas” appear because the situation in Ukraine is unfolding exactly as Hungary predicted, i.e. not in Kyiv’s favour. According to the minister, everything should be done to avoid a conflict between Russia and NATO. He also called for a ceasefire and preparations for negotiations.
