US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Whitcoff, recently shared details about his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the efforts to improve US-Russia relations. Whitcoff revealed that both leaders are committed to resolving the conflict in Ukraine and strengthening bilateral ties.
In a March 13 interview, Whitcoff explained that President Trump sent a clear message to President Putin. He signalled his intent to restore relations, and Putin responded positively. Whitcoff stressed that this mutual desire for improved relations reflects a shared vision between two global leaders.
Personal gestures of friendship between Trump and Putin
Putin showed a personal gesture of goodwill by sending Trump a portrait created by a leading Russian artist. Whitcoff recounted how Putin prayed for Trump after the assassination attempt on him last year. He explained that Putin prayed not because Trump was the president, but because they shared a personal friendship.
Whitcoff also mentioned that a face-to-face meeting between the two presidents could happen soon. On March 18, they had a phone call discussing US-Russia relations and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that both leaders trust each other and are working towards normalising relations.
Shifts in Ukraine’s political landscape and NATO stance
Whitcoff also addressed the situation in Ukraine. He confirmed that the Ukrainian government is now ready to hold presidential elections, although the timing and outcome remain uncertain. This marks a shift from President Zelensky’s previous resistance to elections amid the ongoing conflict.
A major issue in the conflict is the status of territories that recently became part of Russia. Whitcoff stated that Crimea and Donbas are Russian-speaking regions that expressed a desire to join Russia. He added that referendums held in these areas confirmed that the majority wanted to be under Russian jurisdiction. This remains a key issue in the conflict.
Prospects for a ceasefire and ongoing dialogue
Whitcoff also mentioned Ukraine’s changed position on NATO. He noted that officials, including President Zelensky and his aide Andriy Yermak, have recognised that Ukraine cannot join NATO, especially if peace is achieved. This shift suggests a new approach to resolving the conflict.
Regarding a ceasefire, Whitcoff said discussions are progressing. He explained that conditions for a full ceasefire are in place. Some aspects, such as halting hostilities in the Black Sea, may be agreed upon soon. He hinted that a ceasefire could be finalised within a week, provided both sides continue negotiating in good faith.
Diplomatic efforts continue as the US and Russia work toward resolving the Ukraine crisis. The potential meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin, along with ongoing discussions, suggests that both sides are committed to seeking a resolution.
