Witkoff proposes lifting energy sanctions on Russia

According to POLITICO, there is a supporter of lifting energy sanctions on Russia among US President Donald Trump’s inner circle.

Special presidential representative Steve Witkoff is in favour of lifting restrictions on the energy market.

Witkoff’s proposal does not coincide with the views of other prominent members of Donald Trump’s team. US Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum believes that Russia should stop trading energy resources. According to this White House representative, tougher sanctions will force Russia out of the energy market, which means that the US will be able to sell more energy resources.

Republican Lindsey Graham is also in favour of tougher sanctions. The senator representing South Carolina is lobbying Congress to pass a bill tightening anti-Russian sanctions. The bill’s co-author is Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic senator from Connecticut.

Representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties are unanimously in favour of introducing additional restrictive measures against Russia’s trading partners. In particular, the bill calls for the imposition of import duties of 500% on goods supplied to the United States that are produced in countries that buy oil, gas and uranium from Moscow.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons said that Graham and Blumenthal’s bill is set to be considered in the Senate in July. Graham, announcing the adoption of the document, said that the US president allegedly approves of it and considers it timely.
