X faces complaints in EU for using unauthorised data for AI

The officials of nine European countries on Monday received complaints against X (formerly Twitter) over its illegal use of data for artificial intelligence (AI) training.

Noyb (None Of Your Business), a Vienna-based NGO that studies data security issues, announced that it has filed complaints against xAI in Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Poland for violating the EU General Data Protection Regulation.

According to Noyb, Company X began illegally using the personal data of more than 60 million users in Europe to develop artificial intelligence technologies such as Grok, a generative AI chatbot developed by xAI, without their consent and without prior notice.

Noting that the Irish Data Protection Commission initiated legal action against X last week to stop illegal data processing, Noyb said it has filed formal complaints against X in nine countries because Ireland is not fully complying with the GDPR.

X and xAI are owned by US business tycoon Elon Musk.
