4.4 magnitude earthquake caused panic in Italy

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Naples on Thursday night, one of the strongest in the region in 40 years. The epicentre was at a depth of 2-3 km in the Pozzuoli area.

The tremors caused panic, especially in Bagnoli, where buildings, cars and the bell tower of St Anne’s Church were damaged. One woman was rescued by firefighters.

Electricity supply was disrupted in some parts of Naples. People fled their homes in panic, fearing more tremors.

Aftershocks followed the main shock. Firefighters have carried out 40 checks, with 70 more to come.

There were delays on the Naples-Salerno and Naples-Rome railway lines. Authorities closed schools in Bagnoli-Fuorigrotta.
