On 29 September, the EU and Moldova signed an Agreement for Moldova to become a member state of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Once ratified by Moldova, the agreement will enter into force on 1 January 2024.
Moldova has joined the EU’s disaster risk management system following a meeting between Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarčič and Interior Minister Adrian Efros in Chișinău, where the agreement was signed.
“Today, I [Lenarčič] am proud to welcome Moldova to the family of European rescuers: the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. While Russia’s brutal attack against Ukraine resulted in thousands of Ukrainians fleeing from the war, Moldova proved itself to be a reliable partner.”
The commissioner thanked the Moldovan civil protection authorities for their hard work.

Moldova utilised the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to cope with large-scale displacement caused by the war in Ukraine.
Earlier this year, the bloc also stationed 36 electricity generators in 30 hospitals across Moldova from its EU energy reserve. Chișinău has received 48 million euros in humanitarian aid from the EU since the start of the military conflict.
