Ain al-Asad Base housing US military again targeted by drones

The base, located in the western province of Anbar, was hit by a drone strike on Friday morning, with no group claiming responsibility, according to Arab media.

The strike came a day after Iraq’s foreign ministry reported that Baghdad and Washington had agreed to establish a committee to negotiate a phased withdrawal of US troops from the Arab country.

The two countries agreed to form working groups to set out “a specific and clear timeline … and to begin the gradual reduction of its [the coalition’s] advisers on Iraqi soil,” according to an official statement.

Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani, have repeatedly called for the withdrawal of US troops from their country.

There is a need to reorganize this [Iraq-US] relationship so that it is not a target or justification for any party, internal or foreign, to tamper with stability in Iraq and the region.

A series of attacks on United States bases in Iraq and Syria was prompted by US support for the Isralian military action in the Gaza Strip. Representatives of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have claimed responsibility for many such assaults on US troops.

In recent weeks, the US army has attacked the Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Forces several times, killing some Iraqi soldiers.

Last week, Iraqi resistance groups fired several ballistic missiles at Ain al-Asad airbase, after which The US Central Command confirmed that “a number” of US troops were being examined for head injuries.
