Donald Trump said on Friday at an event organised by the National Rifle Association (NRA) that he has been a staunch defender of gun rights while in the White House, and vowed to repeal all restrictions imposed by President Joe Biden if re-elected.
Every single Biden attack on gun owners and manufacturers will be terminated my very first week back in office, perhaps my first day, Trump stated in a speech at the Great American Outdoor show in Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania.
He urged his supporters to “swamp” the polls in November, acknowledging that he needs the states he lost in 2020 if he wants to regain the White House.
On the other hand, the Democratic National Committee placed a billboard in Harrisburg referencing Trump’s comments after the Iowa school shooting in January, when he offered condolences and then told his supporters they should “get over it” and “move forward.”
“Donald Trump to victims of gun violence: ‘get over it,'” the billboard reads.
Republicans, backed by the NRA and other gun rights groups, have largely opposed tougher laws, citing the right to bear arms enshrined in the Second Amendment to the US Constitution despite a steady stream of mass shootings and at a time when the US has the highest gun death rate among wealthy nations.
Trump’s speech came a day after he won the Republican presidential primary in Nevada and the US Virgin Islands, moving closer to the nomination and a likely rematch with Biden in the general election.
