Egypt calls to stop Israel’s escalation in Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa complex

Hundreds of Israelis storm the Al-Aqsa complex in East Jerusalem to celebrate Jewish New Year, according to Anadolu Ajansi.

Egypt denounced the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in East Jerusalem, crowded by Israeli settlers during celebrations.

More than 300 Israeli settlers stormed the flashpoint on Sunday under police protection to celebrate the Rosh Hashanah (New Year) holiday.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has called for an end to the actions provoking millions of Muslims around the world. Such escalation “fuels violence in the seized Palestinian territories,” it says.

The ministry stated that repeated raids and attempts to divide the Al-Aqsa Mosque “will not undermine its historical and legal status as a purely Islamic endowment.”

Such provocative actions undermine the foundations of any settlement on which regional and international efforts rely to revive the peace process based on the two-state solution.

Al-Aqsa is the third most important site in the world for Muslims. However, Jews claim that two ancient Jewish temples used to stand on that area once called the Temple Mount.

Israel took East Jerusalem, where the Al-Aqsa compound is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. In 1980, the country appropriated the entire city for itself.

This action has never been recognised by the international community.
