Erdogan: Turkey could part ways with EU if necessary

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan claimed on Saturday Ankara would “part ways” with the European Union if necessary, Reuters reported.

According to the report, Turkey’s accession to the European Union may not resume under current circumstances. The document also calls on the bloc to study “a parallel and realistic framework” for fruitful interaction with the country.

Turkey has been an official candidate to join the Union for 24 years. However, negotiations have stalled in recent years due to EU concerns about respect for the rule of law and Turkey’s alleged human rights violations.

The EU is trying to break away from Turkey. We will make our evaluations against these developments and if necessary, we can part ways with the EU.

Earlier this week, Turkey’s foreign ministry stated the European Parliament report contained unfounded allegations, which expressed “a shallow and non-visionary” approach to the ties with the EU.
