Far-right extremism one step away from becoming terrorism – EU Commissioner

The threat of terrorism in Europe is growing as the line between far-right extremism and terrorism is gradually blurring, Ylva Johansson warns.

European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson spoke at the Counterterrorism Financing Forum in Brussels to warn of the growing threat of far-right extremism in Europe, emphasising the need for international co-operation in combating terrorist financing.

Far-right terrorism is a growing threat in Europe.

She reported that far-right extremists began to operate more openly, including organising rock concerts and selling commercial products to finance their extremist agendas.

Johansson also highlighted the problem of blurring the line between far-right extremism and terrorism, singling this out as a major challenge in combating the growing threat.

The use of cryptocurrencies and the creation of fake charities further complicates attempts to determine what is a far-right extremist organisation and what is terrorism, the commissioner added.
