French EuroAirport evacuated “for security reasons”

Basel Mulhouse Freiburg airport, known as EuroAirport and located near the Swiss border in France, has been temporarily closed and evacuated, the air harbour said on its website.

The EuroAirport said in a statement:

For safety reasons, the terminal had to be evacuated and is currently closed. Further information will be provided later.

The opening day of the Paris Olympics, July 26, also saw major disruptions to several high-speed train lines, including one linking Paris and London via a tunnel under the English Channel.

Jean-Pierre Farandou, director general of the National Community of French Railways (SNCF), claimed that up to 800,000 people were affected. He also conceded that the problems would persist until the end of the week while repairs were carried out.

According to AFP, sabotage was the cause of the disruptions at the SNCF. A BFM TV source spoke of damaged signalling cabinets and cut cables along the tracks on three lines of high-speed trains.

Farandou and French Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete agreed that these were “co-ordinated malicious acts.” According to the head of the Transport Ministry, flammable substances were found at the scene of the incidents and an investigation is underway.
