On Tuesday, the German Chancellor made a statement on holding new international negotiations on nuclear disarmament. He emphasized that they should include not only Russia and the United States, but also China. He said that several other countries had also built up a nuclear arsenal. Scholz added:
“Getting a fresh start on arms control would be very important.”
Preventing Iran from producing uranium that could contribute to nuclear weapon production “remains an important task,” he said. According to Scholz, nuclear weapons pose an existential threat to humanity, so the world needs to do everything possible to ensure that they are never used.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reports that the number of operational nuclear weapons increased in 2022 as countries pursued long-term plans to modernise and expand forces.
