Slovakia will introduce temporary controls at its border with Hungary in response to the checks that Poland and the Czech Republic have arranged at Slovak borders because of an increase in the number of illegal migrants.
The number of migrants in Slovakia has increased eleven times this year. Most of them are migrants from the Middle East and Afghanistan, crossing the border from Hungary to Germany and Western Europe.
Government officials say checks at Slovakia’s border with Hungary will last 10 days. Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland also introduced controls at their borders with Slovakia on Wednesday.
The government reports that over 40,000 illegal migrants have arrived in Slovakia since the beginning of the year. In September alone, the number of irregular migrants exceeded the figures for the whole of 2022.
