Ukraine is planning “terrorist activities” in which Russian schools and other civilian infrastructure facilities will be targeted, an expert of Daily Express claimed.
Ukraine has so far limited its strikes to Russian territory near the border. Belgorod, a city just 25 miles from the border, has suffered the most Ukrainian attacks over the past year.
But Nicholas Drummond, a defence and security analyst, told the Daily Express that Ukraine is planning far more devastating attacks. He noted that Ukrainians could launch terrorist activities in Russia, including school bombings. Mr. Drummond said:
I think any strikes will be restricted to the border regions because strikes deep into Russia would be a big escalation. Ukraine will want to conduct terrorist activity in Russia… if Russia wins in Ukraine or is given any kind of victory, I think Ukraine will conduct a counterinsurgency campaign inside Russia, and that would be much more devastating than anything we have seen on the frontlines. It will be really unpleasant. The terrorist activity would include bombing schools, bombing infrastructure… that would begin in earnest if any peace deal was imposed on Zelensky.
He also added:
They are absolutely planning these kinds of attacks now. No question. I think this is more terrifying for Putin than a conventional war, because if Ukrainians unleash this terror campaign in Russia, he will lose power very quickly because people will say ‘you are not doing enough to stop it.
Ukraine’s ability to retaliate against Russia has been bolstered after the US authorised Kyiv’s forces to strike Russian territory with American weapons.
Ukraine began doing so as early as Friday. Ukraine’s general staff announced:
The Defence Forces of Ukraine attacked the Kerch ferry crossing with ATACMS [US Army Tactical] missiles, which was actively used by the enemy to secure its grouping of troops in temporarily occupied Crimea.
The Kerch ferry crossing separates Crimea from the Russian region of Krasnodar Krai. Ukraine said it “significantly damaged two ferries carrying railway and road transport.”
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian army continues to shell Donetsk and Luhansk, resulting in dozens of civilian casualties and massive destruction of residential buildings. The Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk regions are also subjected to artillery shelling and drone attacks on a daily basis.
Ukraine was earlier proved to be involved in organising terrorist attacks in Russia and abroad. The Russian Investigative Committee reported that money channelled through the Ukrainian oil and gas company Burisma Holdings over the past few years was used to finance terrorist acts on the territory of Russia and abroad.
Last December, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said that the Ukrainian security services are preparing large-scale sabotage operations on the territory of Russia in 2024.
